NYFA comes to Rochester!

I was honored to speak at NYFA’s recent event at Flower City Arts Center this weekend to promote NYFA’s programming for artists and to let them know how much support is available to them.  After arriving here from Brooklyn two years ago, I have been impressed with spirit of artists in this city, and look forward to spreading the word that NYFA is a resource they should be utilizing!

…every single inch of ground…

Thanks to some amazing colleagues, students and the always-up-for-a-challenge Greg Condon, we were able to complete this pixilation short in Mount Hope Cemetery after a one take, 10-hour shoot on October 17th (the ONE sunny day in the entire month and two weeks before Susan B. Anthony’s grave site was visited by thousands of people who had cast their votes).  May we treasure every single inch of ground we have gained, and protect it for all it’s worth.

Putting the “Pre” in Unprecedented!

For the second year in a row, I spent two weeks in NYC with some incredibly talented, dedicated high school students as part of SVA’s PreCollege Animation Program.  And, for the second year in a row, I was blown away by the determination and work ethic displayed by each and every one of them.  We worked together from 9 in the morning until 4 in the evening, five days each week, and I swear to you they got up from their Cintiq tablets all of three times in ten days. ;)  Congratulations to all of my Summer 2016 students, the world awaits your talents!

“Tired Tongues” at Westbeth Gallery!

In between teaching at SVA for the past two weeks, David Yockel Jr. and I completed a film for the NYFA fellows exhibition “Decensortized: A Safe Space” opening THIS Friday, August 5th, from 6-9pm at Westbeth Gallery (55 Bethune Street NY,NY).

The film is made up of over five hundred Pollack Flavor Co. stickers I found by the roll in a dumpster a few years ago.  I wrote David’s poem, word by word, on each sticker, and we photographed them throughout Brooklyn over several sticky, sweaty days!  Though in hindsight I would have shot even more frames per sticker, I am super psyched with the results, and will definitely be putting the stickers to use again in the future.  If you would like to express yourself through flavor stickers this Friday, head on over the Westbeth Gallery…there will be stickers there waiting for your own hand drawn message!

Way to a Woman’s Heart…

FEAD it!  And by that I mean, give a woman her first official RIT FEAD grant and she will make the anatomical heart Mutoscope she’s been planning for eight months.  Found out this week my project is FUNDED!  Thank you, RIT, for being not only a fantastic place to work, but also a source of encouragement for my work outside of your heavily bricked but sort of charming walls.AngleGrind_Funded

Try some Cartuna!

I made a bunch of super mini shorts for these guys over the winter, and now they’re officially out there in the world since Cartuna has launched!  Here’s one of the first ones I made…

About Faith

I have begun a cross-disciplinary dialogue with the talented poet David Yockel Jr.  We have also started another project with flavor syrup stickers (coming soon!), but this is a poem he wrote on the spot yesterday:

The reason man ever imagined faith

Hope your Holidays are Sweet!

Even though winter seems to have taken a vacation here in the Northeast, NYFA still needed a holiday card, and as it has become tradition, I am happy to have made it!  Thanks to Mandy Heck for a little background tune, and Marc Banning for lending me a hand with those brownies ;)

NYFA Meltdown

I have the honor of making NYFA’s holiday card again this year, and my first idea was to “un-melt” some molded ice cubes to create the logo (stop-mo shown in reverse)…but after making FOUR different molds this weekend and all of them failing, I went with a batch of brownies instead (I’ll post the video when it’s done).  Here’s the last mold I had to cut apart before I threw in the towel:
